Lacewood is a somewhat splintery wood, best known for the very highly distinctive, large, ray flakes that occur in quartersawn cuts. As discussed in the box above, there are several species (not all even related, botanically) that are all sold with this common name and that in fact all look very similar to the naked eye. The wood is so readily identifiable that the various species are often not identified (that is, the wood is just sold as "lacewood")
